Retro Newbie
Hi,

I recently found this bike at the back of my garage and would like to ask if anyone could give me some more information on it as I am looking to sell. Thank you.

1992, looks like a 20 or 21 inch frame.

@Spanky22b
Yeah that's a 92 Kilauea and really rare because it's in black, first one i've seen, if they ever pop up for sale they're normally in the blue/purple like my old one. Still looks like it's got most of the Deore DX kit and the Dia Compe 986 cantilevers,size wise it does look like a 20 inch frame,perfect for you JCS 😉
@Dingerbell measure from the centre of the bottom bracket to the seatpost quick release that'll give you the frame size.

First thing i would do is give it a wash and get all the dirt of it people will low ball with a price with it looking like that.
Pricewise it's hard to say because the market is flat as a fart at the moment but it's very rare because it's a 92 Kilauea which have the triple butted Project Two's and it's in the black option which will definitely appeal to people. It could go for only a £100 or could go for £200 the market is all over the place. If your putting it on ebay i'd probably put the starting bid at £100 and let it run, you may get a bidding war because of its rarity.

Check to see if the seatpost and stem aren't stuck because that will hurt it's value if they are,stems tend to be easy to free up but seatposts can be a whole bigger problem

@Spanky22b Please take no offence, but I´m afraid you have to take off your rose coloured glasses. I see some serious rust on frame and components. What good is the rare colour and components if it needs a respray and the kit it rusted to hell? Without assessing it locally I guess this would struggle to get even 100 quid.

I'd say that will always get £100 even in this state and a couple of hours cleaning it wll make it look a lot more presentable.
Money where my mouth is , I'd give £100 today, if is is near me.

No offence taking everyone is entitled to there own opinion.
But going from the photos available i'm not sure why the frame would need a respray because apart from the ringed areas which is just surface rust the rest looks like dirt and grime. Which from my experience tends to have protected the frame and one thing with early Konas the paint they used is hard wearing,the stem would need a quick respray and more than likely the forks,but that's no hardship.
As for those parts, the rear mech and chain would be for the bin the rest i can gaurentee i could easily get those looking really nice again and functioning as they should do it just takes time, quite alot of time. I appreciate some people can't be bothered doing stuff like that and this bike wouldn't be for them but for the ones that do it's a perfect restoration project.
Pricewise just going off those three photos and until i can see more i'll stick with what i said, as an example my 92 Kilauea in the photo which didn't look like that when i got it alot of cleaning and polishing got it like that. I sold the frame and forks, stem and bar for over a £100 within a couple of hours of listing for sale, so people will always want them.

Going by your theory it looks like i should get my 93 Explosif (last photo) resprayed there's some serious rust there 😉🤣
