Hi.

Picked this up off ebay on Christmas eve after a tip off from Stylus in the ebay watch section - thanks dude.

the summit is their entry level offering, second or third from bottom of the range but specc'd with a reasonable cro mo frame and fork, stx groupset.

first job was to sort the rear hub spacing as the wheel wasnt sitting centrally in the frame - the previous owner had serviced it and not put it back together correctly. sorted that but they are not the smoothest hubs in the world but they will do the job for this winter. The cheapo tyres were binned in favour of some modern Michelin Country Mud tyres - this is going to be my geared winter hack. saddle was swapped for a cheap flite but i think a vetta will be more in keeping for this.

Only other changes are a slightly lighter front end thanks to a Zoom stem. Bar was swapped for a slightly wider, unbranded silver unit. Hard as hell plasticky grips have been swapped for some not-much-better modern club roost jobbies.

cable tension adjustment has the gears sorted and brakes are fettled. maiden voyage tomorrow.

Aren't you under-playing it a bit? I would assume that this double-butted True Temper AVR frame would have been used on all the mid-range models below the Team (True Temper OX), so pretty good quality. According to Bikepedia, it was just called the Summit that year, and only low-end bikes were called Montana.

Not that anybody but me is interested, but I noticed that if you look at the current True Temper tube list, they have Verus, Verus heat-treated and OX Platinum, and the works codes for Verus all start with the letters AVR. So it sounds as though the latest tubeset is either the same as AVR, or a reworking thereof.

Cheers guys.

Thanks Anthony, it is avr tubing and a very 'tingy' frame, although the frame decals do say Montana

I bet it's perfect for your purposes. Not an attention-grabbing kind of bike, but aside from the stem being maybe a touch long it looks to me like it'd be a very dependable and fairly nimble but comfortable beast. How does it handle?

The only thing I don't really like is isn't your fault - the front derailleur cable routing, I always think that long bare cable heading so far out from the frame looks completely wrong!

I love the look of the STX rear derailleurs and they're pretty durable too!

The stem is pretty long but the top tube is quite short so it isn't particularly stretched. Not sure how it rides yet but it is the same size and geometry as my old pro so it should be sweet.

I am a fan of stx, an underrated groups for sure.
