Manitou 2 Rebuild

I may be getting a pair of Manitou 2 forks, which require new elastomers.

I've been to http://www.suspensionforkparts.net and they're out of stock of the Manitou 2 elastomer kits.

Is there any reason why a Manitou 3 kit wouldn't work? I might look to get the Manitou 3 long travel kit too, if it was compatible with the 2s.

As always, any help/advice would be greatly appreciated :)

No, M2 elastomers are not compatible with the M3...

The M2 uses a an elastomer stack in the lower fork leg threaded onto an M6 bolt which provides the damping when the stanchion compresses it downwards (same as M1 and Sport). The M3 has a smaller diameter elastomer stack on a 3mm skewer in the stanchion itself which compresses when a plastic 'piston' on the end of a rod in the lower leg moves upwards (same as M4 and Comp).

The alternative is to replace the elastomers with springs but some people don't like the top-out clunk you get having removed the 10mm top-out elastomer to fit the springs. I have got round this by replacing the stock 120mm M6 bolt with some 150mm bolts and a 30mm rubber top-out damper.

The next stage of my M-project is to buy some 200mm M6 allen bolts and fit M Sport stanchions with extra springs along with the top-out damper to give me a 100mm long-travel M2... 8)

If you don't want to go the sprung route you'll just have to wait until the elastomers are back in stock I'm afraid.

BTW: The long-travel kit for the M3/4 involves removing the compression rod, cutting off the lower plastic disc that seats the 20mm top-out elastomer and adding elastomers to the stack in the stanchion. You also have to remove or replace the skewer the elastomers thread onto because it will no longer reach the hole in the compression rod with potentially dodgy consequences if the skewer missed the hole under compression!

did you get that got condition set of ebay for £9.99 + post? If you did, good deal as I paid about £60 for mine and then had to get an elastomer kit as well.
Drop them a mail and ask when they will be back in stock. They were helpful when I mailed them to buy my kit.

Carl.

patience bb!......it cant all be bad though, what with that almega on route to you!.... :D

Haha, every cloud and all that ;)

I've gone from no bikes, to a Cro Mega ("Blackstar"), and a NOS Al Mega in a week - as far as weeks go, it hasn't been a bad one

Barney,

I must've bought the last set of Manitou 2 elastomers from them. However, I do have the original red elastomers which are in fantastic condition. I didn't realize they were still in the forks before I rebuilt them, otherwise I wouldn't have bought the replacements in the first place. If you buy the Manitou 2 and need them, just let me know.

I've got a Manitou Sport (same mcu as M2) without elastomers. If Barney doesn't want yours, I'm interested!
