Hi all

I picked up my first retro build a few months back on Ebay for £64. The prrevious owner had a seized seatpost heated out of the frame and ruined the zolatone paint. Heres how it looked on Ebay..

and the damage to seatpost tube..

I stripped it down and then had the frame, forks, stem and handlebars powdercoated. New brake and gear cables, cleaned up the shiny bits and then applied new decals off Gil and heres how it looks at the mo...

Thinking of changing the saddle to something more suitable any ideas anyone? Also anyone tell me anything about these rims they're fitted to Shimano XT hubs...

hi. looks alot better now mate! i had one of these a couple of years ago, i broke it for spares in the end. i should have done more on the restoration front now ive seen yours!

the rims are'nt original i dont think. i remember a smokey bronze finish to the originals, almost like araya or something. still good stuff though!
the DX groupset is pretty hard wearing and one of my favourite brands.
were the gear shifters sticky and tight by any chance? the often need a good blast of penetrating fluid.

good condition marin seats from this period are hard to find but keep looking and something will turn up. as an alternative..WTB saddles seem to suit marin bikes or any cycle manufacturer for that matter.

good work.

That looks spot on, cracking job for your first restoration. WTB do a black and orange saddle, seen a few come up on ebay, that would look great on this.

Could I ask where you got the powdercoating done, is it local, reasonable price?

Thanks for the kind remarks,

Yes it's a 29.4mm seatpost and I've been looking for a nice black period one, deore if I could get one in that size.

Weeman it's been stripped and powdercoating by a firm in Redditch think it was £55 +vat. Nice bloke and they bunged all holes/threads. Thanks for the link to the saddle think I'll get one.

Already looking for another project as my missus didn't like the Trek I bought off here a few weeks back.
