Finally got round to having a proper look at it, was originally White well the back end was anyway front just seems to be dodgy black respray over black, took the forks off steerer is White with bit of blue and there's some White on the drop outs, cable guides are all on the downtube and aren't slotted, I have a couple more pics, iPhone again I'm afraid but lack of computer means I can't load them up here

Another vote here for Ridgeback. There is a metallic blue one on here somewhere that looks very similar.

Diamond back of that era would have had to have been an Axis to have had XT, the Blue white '89 Ascent EX was canti front and rear with Mountain LX (there is an Ascent EX frame in my garage at the moment).
What colour was an '88 Axis? (88 was a smoke finish year)

from what i can see from that pic it looks alot more like the ridgeback than the diamond back, first thing i noticed was the one I've got only has one set of bottle cage mounts and the diamon d back has two but I can't zoom in enough to see the dropouts etc to look for similarities there
