I just ordered a SunRace MFM4S 7-speed freewheel without proper research. Should it work or should I cancel order?
Thanks! Problem is I want to try 1x7 gearing as my front derailleur is kaput, so I will need something wider range (granny gear wanted).legrandefromage":23j4mmg8 said:Cancel as its a screw on type not a cassette - its a very misleading description if you dont know exactly what you need.
This is what you are looking for if its definitely a cassette you need and you dont have a screw-on rear hub wheel

Stock derailleur. Could be M550. Not rated for larger than 30T, but internet seems to say it should work anyways. A picture of it:legrandefromage":3miz6vf5 said:What mech do you need?
I believe I misunderstood your original question. I have the rear mech. It's working. The front mech is not. Or perhaps it is. Previous owner removed (and lost) the screw with a red ring in the below picture (not my picture or mech, Googled something close to what I have) to get the chain out:legrandefromage":xjr5bn3k said:I can send you a matching front mech if you want
Thanks! It just dawned on me that I have the front mech here in the house. Rest of the bike is elsewhere. I will have a look and see if I can do something with it. I'll get back to you if I need one! What's the condition like?legrandefromage":2p3llc21 said:I can send you a matching front mech if you want
Good to know, thanks!jimo746":2p3llc21 said:That bit on the front mech will be threaded.
But you could bodge a small nut + bolt on there to hold it together.
Thank you, that's very kind. I'll have a look at the derailleur first and see if it looks usable or if there's other damage to it.jimo746":2p3llc21 said:Or I probably have an old mech with the right screw to fit there, yours for postage cost.
Decisions, decisions! I guess 1x10 would be an unorthodox dream, but then I'll need a new hub/wheel, derailleur, chain etc. Speaking of decisions. This will be a drop bar conversion. So I'll be needing me some bar-end shifters (already have the TRP RRL brake levers).jimo746":2p3llc21 said:All of the above will be much cheaper than fitting a new wider range cassette, but you can get those if that's the route you want to go (sram do one, Shimano do up to 34T I think? Also look at Sunrace and Ztto etc...) .
