Kona sex frame!

a broken and non-standard shock takes some of the fun out of it. so why am i keeping an eye out?

1995, not 93/94 as stated in the ad - 1995 was when the Sex bikes first came out and the 95 colour was called Kula Gold Metallic, which is just about right for that.

The trouble with that kind of frame is that it really needs a respray, but is the fundamental value of the frame sufficient to justify spending a lot of money on it? Perhaps it would look ok with an economy powdercoat finish though (plus Gil_M decals of course). My other concern would be that they soon dropped that design in favour of the Turner design with the vertical shock for the 96 Sex Three, which kind of suggests that they found that this design didn't work very well. Still it might work a lot better with a modern air shock (I'm not really all that retro - function over form for me!)

Absolutely classic name for a bike though, worth an extra £50 for that alone IMO.

the AMP design is said to be quite weak in that its too soft sideways (never rode one miself tough). many company seem to have had frames on that design (fat chance, mongoose, kona asf.). these disappeared quite fast.

i owned one off these, as okay bakc then but after the shock blew a o ring throu the side i retired it. still in my mates back garden now after 10 years or so.

Yes, the rear triangle does look a bit flimsy, doesn't it? And the seatstays are only connected to the frame via the shock, so there'd be some lateral play there. The frame is double-butted Easton Elan, so that probably isn't up to modern levels of stiffness either.

It came with a 'damper' called a Marzocchi A25 when new, and I have to confess I've never seen one of those. And again, they can't have been very successful as Marzocchi didn't make them for very long. The 1996 Sex Too had a Fox Alps 4 on it instead.

i have some closeups of the shock linkage from the seller.

if anyone is interested, i'll upload them later

Yes please. It's not even clear from the listing whether or not you could fit a modern shock to it if that one's shot.

doesnt look like it.

the only way i could see it working is by fitting a shock direct to the swingarm, AMP B2 style
