1983 Raleigh Team Professional

Dirt Disciple
Hi all,
Having spent many months looking at some amazing bike on this forum I managed to get a Raleigh 531c. From the serial number it appears to be a Worksop build from April 1983 number 1915. It appears to be original paint and decals. It a mix of components.
Stem, handle bars, front & rear derailleur are Mavic.
Brakes & Crankset are Shimano 600.
shifter and headset are Campagnolo
to get it running.
The wheels are in need of replacing as currently the front brake pad won't align with the wheel break area.
I will also replace the bar tape and get brake lever hoods.
Any advice welcome.
Regards Alan

Hi Alan

Nice bike!

What is the issue with the front brake? Is it that the brake block won't move up or down far enough to hit the centre of the rim? I just can't tell from the picture above but it looks like the block is at the very top of the slot? is that right? So you may have long reach calipers and need to swap them for std short reach.

Measure the distance in mm from the centre of the brake pivot bolt in the fork crown to the centre of the brake surface of the rim - that should tell you what to fit. I'm assuming the wheels you currently have fitted are 700c

Cheers

Hi Neil,
Thanks for the response.
Yes the brake block is moved up fully but is still below the brake surface. Didn't realise there were short/long reach calipers.
The first think I will try and get is a descent set of 80's mavic wheels with either campagnolo or shimano hubs.
Considering either putting a Campagnolo Nuovo Record or shimano 600 (6207/6208) eventually. Any advice on either (pros/cons)
Did this model (professional) only sell as a frame set? The Raleigh Ti Team replica 12 came with full Campagnolo Nuovo Record.
The seat post is extended to the max but is still 15-20mm too low so will also need a replacement seat post.

A pair of 600 ex would look nice and bring the cables to the correct (Campag and Dura Ace) side of the calliper :)

Something like a Kalloy seat post which is longer and at less than a tenner won't break the bank to get you riding ......

Here's a pic of my 1983 frame peeking out from the cardboard........., your forks look younger than the frame?

Shaun what a tip & you should tidy that up ASAP & you may find more treasure in there....

Hi Shaun,
Thanks for response.
I'm a fan of the 600ex after seeing Maca's 531 Team Panansonic and will probably change to that groupset. Do you think the fork is older than 83 or newer?
The ends have Columbus engraved, is this correct?
The brake calipers have 57 engraved on the back. does this mean there long reach? (don't want to purchase wrong size calipers!)
What diameter seatpost do I need to buy? (its about 27 but not sure)
Where can the kalloy be purchased.
Apologies for all the questions but all these standard and sizes etc is confusing.
Thanks, Regards,
Alan

Seat post should be 27.2mm and you'll need 39-49mm drop brakes. eBay should be a good place to pick up a kalloy seat post. It sounds like your forks have been replaced. Worksop closed in 1981 so your frame was made at the Nottingham lightweight unit, still a great frame and nice ride, cheers, Andy.
