The Gorgenzolo Special - Drillium to the extreme!

I've been looking for this for ages after a cycling colleague of mine mentioned reading it in an old copy of "The Victor Book for Boys" while on holiday back in the 1970's. He thought it was a Alf Tupper "Tough of the Track" story, but it turns out it was a one-off.

So, here we have the story in all it's Drillium Glory! (Pages 1 to 4)...

Re:

I remember having that book. It was a victor annual. Hell, I might well still have it somewhere .... maybe my bro took it. If he did, it'll be a cert he binned it by now as he doesn't do retro or sentimentality

Re:

Yeah I remember that story too, not in much detail! I used to get "The Victor" delivered every Saturday, around the time Merckx was winning his first Tours, although I didn't have a clue who Merckx was at that time..

Strangely I too remembered it as an Alf Tupper story- It might as well be- Socio-economically disadvantaged protagonist outwits the competition despite their initial derision and later foul play.

It is by absorbing such morality tales in my formative years that I got to be the astounding success I am today.. :)

I have a bit of an issue with the continuity advisor concerning the last two pictures of the bike. Until I noticed it was all totally believable.

Great stuff! I remember a serial in the 'Adventure' about a British team in the Tour de France. This would have been in the late 50's when British riders were starting to become more frequent in the tour. Lots of dirty dealings - water in tyres, dodgy feeding bottles, tacks on the road, unfriendly spectators etc. etc.

Surely nobody actually behaves like that in real life - do they?
