Restoration of 1978 Eddy Merckx touring bike

Hi There,

As a child I received an Eddy Merckx touring bike for Xmas. It's metalic red has a yellow Eddy Merckx sticker in the frame and a picture of the great man himself on the head stock (As a kid other children would ask me why I had a picture of Elvis on my bike ..lol).

It has been sitting in a shed now for 20 odd years and I would very much like to get it restored back to as original condition as possible. Does anyone know of a restorer in Scotland who might be able to help me?

Also, any information about the bicycle itself would be nice to know as well :) I'll post some pics tonight or tomorrow when it stops raining.

Thanks,
Jeff

Welcome

In 1978 Merckx bikes were made by a number of manufacturers, here in the UK it Was Falcon. I don't remember a touring version though. Pics would be nice :)

The mechanicals of a 1978 bike are pretty straightforward and aside from asking a local bike shop to sort out the bottom bracket and using a painting place if it needs finishing everything else can be done in your garage :)

Best of luck

Shaun

Jeff, I'm too young to help with your questions about your bike, but I fixed the image links for you - the address for each image ending with '.jpg' is the one you want.

Doesn't look like any Merckx bike I have seen before, sorry..... I worked in a bike shop in the 70's and we sold them. The decals are all in the wrong place and would never have left the factory like that and the frame is wrong for the brand. I never recalled a Merckx frame with a dynamo holder on the forks. Did you get it new?

I can't make out what is written in script on the top tube. Is there a frame number on it? under the botom bracket, rear dropout, under the seat on the seat tube?

Cheers

Shaun

I'm guessing here, but isn't it one of the low-end Eddy-branded bikes made under licence by Falcon in the 70s - a Merckx in name only?
