Dirt Disciple
I've come across a kona cinder cone i think is a 1993 but the colour is grey and not the two tone paint job of the catalog. What do you guys think did kona made a one tone paint job for 1993? The frame is a little rusted but i'm thinking of painting it, and maybe put disc tabs is that possible??
Just one more question do you guys know where can i find the 1993 stickers only found 1994 in ebay.
I know this must be a dull post but i'm new to retrobiking and need all the help i can get.

Thanks for your time.

93 was definately green at the back fading into silver at the front. can't remember what 92 was (purple?) but it was a one colour paint job as was 94 (gold IIRC).

Dark grey was one of the colour options for the 94 Cinder Cones, so it could be a 94. UK 93 Cinder Cones were two-tone as Wu-Tangled says, but there was a US-only version that I think was grey. If you're unsure whether it's a 93 or a 94, one way to tell is whether it has a triangular hole in the dropout as below. They used those dropouts from 1990 to 1993.

It is certainly possible to have disc tabs added if you're having it resprayed. It's more a question though of whether it's a sensible investment, as it's going to cost you quite a lot including the paint, and just how much is a 93 or 94 Cinder Cone worth? If the rust is only surface, I would have a good go over it with Autoglym or equivalent first, and see what you think of it then, before deciding on expensive modifications.

See www.konaretro.com for the 93 and 94 decal styles. I would guess that Gil_M on here could sort you out either way.

it has a triangular hole in the dropout so it's a 93, funny you mention a US only version because i live in portugal so we were probably got the US version to because there was no autorized dealer at the time.

You are right no need for disk tabs. I don't want to spend a lot of money on it so a good v brake or maybe a hs11 are enough.

A friend of mine said that the maximum size fork recomended for this frame is 80mm can you guys comfirm that, i have an old fork that is 100mm would like to use it...

Thanks guys

I understood it was north America only, but you could be right about Portugal getting them. The Cinder Cone page of the US 93 catalogue is below. I'm not sure, but it looks vaguely grey to me, or maybe silver.

Well the 93 frames weren't 'suspension-adjusted', so Kona would advise you to use only a short-travel fork - it was designed really for rigid, or at a pinch the early c50mm forks. You'll see it mentions Quadras and Mag 21s there, but even so they changed the geometry for 94 to properly accommodate suspension. I reckon you'd be ok with an early Z2 (65mm) or something like that though. And it's all a matter of taste anyway - whatever Kona say, some people run them with longer forks and like them like that.

that's it,it's kind of metallic grey, maybe mine was bought in the US i have no clue.
I've got it down to just the frame and the rust just looks superficial so good news there.
I'll try a old judy xc i can get for free and see how it looks.

Thread hijack sorry lads ,,, my cindercone was a funny army green colour any clue of the year ???????
I don't know about funny, but army green reminds me of this one that was sold on eBay just a few days ago, did yours look like that? If so, it was a 1991. This colour never appeared in a Kona brochure, but I don't think it was all that uncommon for them to vary the colours in those days.

I think rust can often look a lot worse at first sight than it really is, and I haven't seen many Konas with structural rust coming from the inside, it's usually just surface. If you can save the paint and you quite like the colour, it might be worth bearing in mind that it is quite rare to find one in that colour in Europe. A Judy would a good match for it as well, so it sounds like you could turn it into a very nice bike with a bit of tender loving care.
