I have got one of them there original Offroad Flexstem thingies on my 89 Offroad Pro AM. The bike is pretty much unused but the passage of time has not been kind to the elastomers in the stem.

I have read about using skateboard truck bushings as replacements......but does anyone have and other ideas....or if you have used them what sort/make did you use and what durometer ratings work best.

A pic of the offending item below. 8)

I'm sure others will have found a sideways replacement ant, I never have but worst case scenario there are plenty of tatty stems on the bay for beer money containing a useable elastomer.........not exactly what you asked I know, but hope isn't lost.......I like that white one. It's early but it looks great.......the designs of flex stem that came in the following few years lost a little something I feel........good luck with it.....

I have one of these 1st generation stems also with a toasted elastomer.

1st gen (like yours) uses a square and somewhat thin elastomer, 2nd generation uses a skateboard (circular) bushing that I believe is thicker.

My solution was to cut a bumper to fit from a large blank of rubbery material I have on hand, but I would think it should be easy enough to modify a skateboard bushing to fit the stem.

Another option would be to take an old fork elastomer and cut it down to fit.

Sorry if I was talking horse shite then ant.........I assumed the elastomers were the same.........

I used some Venom longboard bushings for my Offroad Flexstem (had to cut them in half but they work fine).

I would recommend using the softest longboard bushings you can find. The blue ones should be good. I mistakenly used some purple ones, which were rock hard!

Cool ...thanks chaps

Caspar.....are those the 78a Venom bushings? They seem to be the softest available and nicely colour matched !. Also what did you cut them with?

I'll double check tomorrow but I'm pretty sure they were. I used the cone shaped one at the back and then cut the other in half using a Stanly knife and then sanded it down.
