Hmmm. Been piecing together a '92 Explosif and got as far as setting up the cantis (with help from folks on the forum - ta). When setting up brakes it became apparent that the rear wheel is not central in the rear triangle. The rim is offset about 5 mm to the right (crank) side. This is the case both at seat stay and chain stay (rim closer to right stay).

So far I have:
1. Checked wheel is properly seated in the dropouts. Yes.
2. Tried different skewer. No change.
3. Reversed wheel in dropouts (cassette to left). Little change. Slightly reduced offset but in still to right side of triangle.
4. Tried different wheel. Same results.
5. Run string round head tube to outside of dropouts. Measurements to seat tube are 41 mm right and 35 mm left.
6. Sworn. Lots.

Unless I'm missing something I reckon the rear of the rear of the triangle is offset to the right. Before I go at it with 2x4 or monkey wrench a la Sheldon Brown, or pour myself a large Highland Park and swear some more, might I be missing something obvious?

Drink some more Highland Park and leave it until tomorrow :D

Redish the wheel to suit. Carry on.

That assumes that the wheel is simply offset. It might not be straight in the frame.

Exactly. I'm thinking not straight in frame and that rear triangle is responsible thus different alignment of left and right and dropouts w.r.t. seat tube (string results). If that is the case, won't redishing just result in a wheel alignment problem?

My Marin is like that, it must have been like it since I bought it because I didn't even notice until I put a different wheel in it, one that was fine in other frames. As LGF suggests, I just re-dished the new wheel and it doesn't seem to cause any issues, feels absolutely fine when I ride it. I guess my frame must have been made late on a Friday afternoon. :D

Well.....ok. But that all sounds like treating a symptom and not a cause. Will ponder. Possibly with dram...

You could take it to a frame builder and have it cold set (bent back into shape) for not much dough, or just re-dish the wheel.
The frame builder will probably get the alignment back to better than new!
