Let's be honest, most people wouldn't know a good bike if it came and bit them, or understand why we're so attached to our bikes. I'm sure it wasn't meant in a bad way.
It is a good idea to have a no-think bike, though. Something for train stations and one you don't mind lending out to casual acquaintances.

Dont lend it out, buy a second hand bike shaped object from somewhere and lend that instead (infact offer to give it away afterwards) that should save your wifes offer for her, but note down the pace lending incident as a possible ground for divorce should you ever need one.
