Then a friend got a 'MTB' not an ATB you know.

LOL - yeah I remember the whole it's an MTB not an ATB thing. ATB's were Peugeot's and Emmelle's and (Giant's - how times have changed for the big G)

...and MTB's were Spesh's and Muddy Fox's and Saracen's and Overbury's etc...

:D

I actually have a problem riding into parked cars. Women or not.

Done it nicely three times now.
Once slashed wrists and window, threatened with court, and paid for it at £2/week. Other two times just a crash, check for damage obviously ;) , and carry on. ish.

Always uphill at full pelt too.

that was the concious decision to not join the gang at school that were into the TDF and (at the time) Peugeot steel racing bikes like the Tourmalet and Perthus Pro, but instead lean toward the newly forming sub culture of mtb'ers with their penchant for Kili Flyers and Muddy Fox's.

Hey! I was one of those kids!

I was really torn, I had the choice of getting a Peugeot 531c or Shogun TrailbreakerII and went the Mountain bike route I am please to say.
I rode on the road only but all my mates had MTB's so I followed suit. Must have been 14.... Did my first race (Quantock Cracker) shortly after and never stopped!

Oohh, I’m hurt!! Too much of a lady indeed!!

I'm of woman flesh but I'm no lady!!!!

I've never hit anything, touch wood, but my husband certainly has and found himself on the backseat of a car twice, parked ones at that.

My first MTB experience was when I was 20something when some git nicked my road bike and my sister and brother bought me, a poor mature student, a mountain bike to replace it, until some git stole that one too, right from under my nose.

I'm being reborn again at the mo and building us all MTB's as we've flogged the car.

Building the aforementioned Clockwork and a nickel P7

I don't know what prompted it, but the purchase, around '89 of a new Raleigh Montage (one of only 2 new bikes I have ever bought!) set me on the road, so to speak.
The real Eureka moment came when, upon purchasing my first copy of MBUK, I laid eyes on my first mountain biking true love - and she was called 'Cannondale'.
Sure enough, around '91 I bought the second new bike I would ever buy - a Black, pink-stickered SM400.
What a bag of s*** that turned out to be  . Low end Suntour group and the heaviest Cro-mo Bar/Stem/Fork combo you have ever seen  But what a frame! and one which I upgraded furiously (and to me at the time, expensively) until a couple of years later, a new mistress caught my eye - a second-hand Proflex 752. We were to be together in the summer of '93.

Absolutly nothing to do with the thread, but a guy i work with used to car share with another bloke at work, and they sat behind a car for about 2 minutes waiting for it to move, before one of them (not the driver) noticed it was parked. :D

Just a random parked car story.......sorry, i'll get my coat.

1988 for me. Always been into cycling and the hills. In the winter I skied and in the summer I wanted to do something that would give me the same buzz.

Started saving like crazy and in 1989 I dropped £350 of hard earned cash on a Specialised Rockhopper - Cream front and blue black. The first of the 7spd bikes and without the dreaded U-brake.

I still ride many of the same places and although the bikes have changed the grin remains.
