Shimano chains seem to be made of pasta. They are beautifully smooth and quiet, but it seems to be at the expense of durability. KMC and SRAM last longer IME.

+1 for the KMC chains, ive had the one on my SS for just over two years and its still ok ... and thats the only bike i ride at the mom

Just done an hour and a half of winter night riding in the Surrey slurry - loved it the bike sounded awful in the sandy crud though though. Abrasive.
