After a couple of evenings completely stripping and cleaning the bike, including some rust removal (aluminium foil, what a revelation!), then putting on the new cog, ring and chain, the bike is sorted.
At least, the back end is. I still need to do something about the front, but that can wait.
Initially I had a lot of chain skipping, but once I had lost a couple of links (thanks to this Forum for the advice), she now rides like a dream. Yes, you have to put more effort in on the hills and can't go quite as fast on the flats, but my commute is now more fun thanks to the directness of the drivetrain. I've even started looking for races to have a go at.
