Shimano xtr M900 rear derailleur.HELP PLEASE.

Peterbike

Retro Newbie
I broke the hanger bolt on my Specialized MTB's rear derailleur which is a Shimano XTR M900. For the life of me I can't get the old hanger bolt removed from the assembly.

I can't get the ring with the set screw off to get to the spring and the rest of the assembly.

Any advice would be great! I have soaked everything in W40,pried as much as possible, but the thing doesn't budge. It has probably never been opened before.

Please see pics...

Thanks!!
Pete

Looks like that c-clip has disappeared into a hedgerow. If you rotate the hanger bolt with an Allen key whilst pushing it through from the back, it should pop out. Be careful that the ring with the screw doesn’t fly off as well - the main spring is under load.

The bolt looks to be made of aluminium as it looks anodised in the bottom. Perhaps the aluminium bolt has seized to the steel knuckle. Try using an Allen key to move it and use something to tap it out

Thank you! Yes the c-clip disappeared in the woods.that will be another little challenge to find a replacement for.
I have tried to to push the broken bolt through from the broken side with hammer and pin. It didn't budge. However it rotates freely when turned with an Allen key. So weird...
Anything else I could try? There isn't anything else holding the bolt or that ring,is there?thanks again!

There are a couple of O rings inside, I suspect that's what's gumming things up. Probably it just needs more force if all the locking clips are removed.

Defiantly more of that hammer and bar/rod,
Also looks like you tried to prise the ring off.
It'll be the bolt against the ring stopping it.

Really give it a hit from the back to knock the bolt through.

Though I do have to say sometimes these aftermarket hanger bolts can be really tough to fit and remove. I had an srp bolt in an m950 rear mech and that was really tough to lodge out.
