Shimano rech mechs, rebuildable?

The pivot points on old Shimano mechs are stamped in - a vice, a cold chisel and a hammer in just the right place would stiffen up the pivots nicely.

My choice of hammer is a cheese, pickle and hammer sanderwhich peeps....

Back in 1992/3 a friend rebuilt a DX mech. New pivot pins and all - he was in an engineering dept in a Uni and didn't have a girlfriend at the time.

I've serviced the main pivot of a couple of old XT mechs. They are a bu**er to put back together though - greasy fingers, strong springs, small parts = lots of swearing.
