Removing Crown Race without proper tool ??

I use a plastic headed mallet and an aluminium quill/ahead adaptor (minus the quil part) to remove the race and cups of headsets. So long as you dont over do it, and keep the tapping moving equally around the cup/race, it seems to work well.

I use a six inch nail with the point filed off, inhereted with my dad's toolbox- use the head against the race, and work round.
For putting back on, I have an old metal hoover tube with a plastic ferrule, fits nice and kentucky for 1 1/8th, plastic doesn't damage the race.
The real knack I suppose is not being too severe with the hammerin'.

Tis true! Removed several over the years this way and all were used again.

Flat head screw driver and mallet.
