As the mountain bikes first appeared in the British cycle shops, various magazine and book articles appeared that anticipated the coming interest in cycling off-road. Some told of existing activities like Cyclo-cross and rough-stuff riding etc. Others contained information about the US Marin bikes and their pioneers, as awareness of them grew amongst the British cycling press.

This thread is a forum for archiving and discussing such reports, reviews and articles. It should form history of those formative years. Not just anecdotes, but proof of what people at this time really thought about these new bikes.

The Press wasn't all good either!
Not everyone welcomed the mountain bikes. I remember that some road racing cyclists were very dismissive of mountain bikes at first. They did not take them seriously as as they weren't real bikes, and so mountain biking wasn't to be considered real sport. And some other country-user groups wanted them banned on safety or environmental grounds.

To start things off, here's an Bicycle Times article from 1979 that tells that all-terrain cycling wasn't a just an American invention. Note that there's no mention is made of the mountain bikes. Can we assume that the writer had not heard of them yet?
