I think the salt on the roads each winter is far worse than living by the sea. Unless you are so close that the spray lands on your car, or you drive on the beach and in the salt water.

Well, that's probably true, though there is definitely quite a bit of salt in the air here - we're only metres from the beach and you can often taste the salt in the air.
The horrible mixture of road salt nicely glued in place by the water and muck from the country roads probably does the most damage to the underbody as you say though...
