I stand corrected - looking the pics on a big screen there would have to have been a lot of filler on those joints

A pipe cutter might not work on a Thomson post. Reason being that rather than using a standard gauge pipe pressed or welded onto the head they started with a billet of aluminum and machined the shaft and lower head out of it, and then machined the inside of the shaft oval to save weight but have strength in the direction it's needed. It's probably overkill for a seatpost but you have to admire the attention to detail.

Here's one I cut earlier (with a hacksaw) to show the inner profile -
