My 1989 Kona Cinder Cone - Splatter Paint

Hi All,

When I was 13/14 I fell in love with the Kona range at that time (as well as a few others to be honest!) and I spent many, many hours thumbing through the Kona catalogue I managed to get from the bike shop that actually sold decent bikies in our nearest town (16miles away).

Me and my friend used to go there on a Saturday and drool over the Kona's, Marins and GT's that were in the stock at the time.

I have spent many years on this forum, watching, learning and observing and have now got the time to start my collection.

It begins with this original 18" 1989 Kona Cinder Cone. Aside from the tyres, pedals and a "period" DX STI Shifter upgrade, it is totally original.

I have taken it out for its maiden voyage, well my maiden ride anyway, and it was like I was 13 again. The bike just has a stance, feel and the handling like nothing these days.

A few pics below, before I clean it properly.

I am now looking to expand my collection with some icons of the time that I want to add.

All will need to be 16, 17 or 18"

1990 Kona Explosif
1990 Kona Lava Dome (Yellow paint job with splatter)
1989 or 1990 Kona Fire Mountain
Alpinestars Al Mega DX (Not Elevated Chainstay model)
Orange Clockwork
GT Avalanche (1990)

Hope you like this one :D

Lovely bike and a great wish list. I'd have gone for an Orange Prestige instead but basically the same list I'd have made in 1990. I have a garage full of exotic bikes from that period and I'd trade several of them for a 1990 Explosif. One day.

Thats looking nice, and these older Kona's ride great

Re:

Nice!

I've had a fair few splatter paint Konas. IMHO I'd buy a 1990 Cinder Cone over the Lava Dome. I have a 1990 Fire Mountain with full XT! I miss my 1990 Cinder though.

The 1990s ride way better than the 1989 as the geometry is more, umm, 'betterer' ;)
