I recently came across a 1994 Scott Sandoa with Alivio MC10 cranks, and I need to replace the bottom bracket. Is it possible to use a longer axle than the original 110.5 mm? Sheldon Brown states that the size for these cranks can range from 110.5 to 113 mm. What happens if I use a longer axle?

It just pushes the chain line out a bit, usually no biggy, just adjust the front mech accordingly. BUT don’t go more than 113mm or the chainline will be really crap.

Working out the existing chainline will help.
Sheldon says 47.5 - 50mm for MTB triple. If it's less than that, longer axle.
