Late 60s/early 70s Carlton

Good afternoon,

Just picked this up, classic barn find! Needs a lot of work, but I couldn’t resist the chrome forks and the Brooks saddle!

I’m thinking Carlon Corsa? The guy I bought it from said late 60s/early 70s. Weinmann 730 side pull brakes, Simplex 5 speed derailleur, that’s about all I can identify!

Can anyone shed some light on a model and date?

Cheers!

Wow, that is some patina! I like it. 👍

Can't help with the model ID, I'm afraid, but more knowledgeable members will be along shortly.

WRT to dating it, the Weinmann brake calipers should have a date stamp on the back. If yours are original to the bike they will give you a fairly close approximation of its build year:

I think the Corsa had wrap-over seat stays and different, more ornate lugs. Yours seems to have shot-in stays. It looks like the Professional model.

Looks like it could be a Criterium 5, got shot in seat stays and full chrome forks as my later version had, thought it also had chrome head lugs.

I thought the Corsa had the wrap over stays but I wondered if it was an earlier design. Not sure the spec is good enough for the Professional?

The seat stays were a Carlton feature called the "Victor" seat stay cluster. Not many Carlton bikes had them, Giro was one model that springs to mind.

Yes you could be right, in my haste I missed the shot in seat stays, the Giro, Criterium shown (c1971) and the Professional had these. Ive checked and the Truwel model was the same colours and chrome fork but had Crespera lugs and wrap over seat stays.

The Victor seat stay design didn't last long as the frames had a habit of cracking where the stay meets the frame. Carlton had the bright idea of slimming down the diameter of the stay as it went into the frame, the reverse of normal shot in stays.... Giro and pro reverted to more normal shot in stays lol
