Is this how bikes were locked in the 60's ?

I also remember a "that's life" episode where some toddler opened a cortina with plastic toy keys.

More recently I un-nlocked and got into a nissan sunny. Only on looking at the strangers stuff on the passenger seat did I realise mine was parked 2 rows further back, I got out of that sharpish.

This is a true story. When I was still a sixth former, a friend decided to do a sponsored hike in order to raise money to get him to India to work with slum children. Knowing Dartmoor very well and having lots of the kit required I offered to help. He had just passed his driving test and was the proud owner of a 1300 two tone (dark brown and biege) Mk II Ford Escort estate.
It was a shed and misfired it's way to the Avon Dam where we were to leave it overnight whilst we headed for the bleak moors. Upon our return it absolutely refused to start and so, swearing extensively we set off to find a call box as mobile phones were not yet cursing the world with their presence.
I called my dad and said the thing was parked at the end of the carpark and that we would see him on our return from the village of Aish (for those who know the area).
My dear old dad is no mechanic and so it was with some horror we saw him surrounded by complicated looking parts of the ignition system laid carefully on the grass.
The root of our shock was the fact that my friend's car was parked at the other end of the carpark and the cruel hand of fate conspired to bring another two tone Ford Escort estate into the carpark in the time we were away.

We reassembled the bits as best we could and legged it in my dad's car and collected the shed MUCH later.

we once got 3/4 of the way home one night when my old man stopped th car and switched on the interior light, said something that at the young age I was back then I shouldnt have heard and drove us back to where we had just come from
we got back to the car park to find some guy ranting about kids knicking his car and joy riders and how crap the police were! as we parked he came running over screaming thats my car etc and was quite relieved that he had got it back
the copper did the usual thing is this your car sir? the old man said no thats my car just there and pointed to another bannana yellow vauxhal victor 2.3 with a peel back fabric sun roof and tow bar the only difference in the two was the automatic sticker on the boot! the old man had just driven off and around 12 mile in a manual car before he suddenly realised something was wrong!
the copper and the other guy found it quite funny especially when he said that he to got into our car but didnt drive off as he didnt know how to drive an auto! :LOL:
 
In a similar vane but bang up todate DaveDH at the end of our recent trip to Glentress could not get into his car because the batteries in his flash modern key fob had died. He phoned everyone and anyone to figure out how to fix this before finally remembering an old fashioned key was secreted within the electronic fob which allowed him to access his car. Progress, I ask you :LOL: :LOL: :LOL:

True, but that's probably because the locks are 30 years old.

Then again i remember when i had a MK2 Escort back in 92 a mate used to "steal" it using the keys for his Hillman Avenger :LOL:

Hehe, I lost the keys for my mk2 RS2000 Custom when I was 18 and used the handle of a teaspoon to get in and out and start it for a few years. I only changed the locks when I came to sell it.
 
I had an uber rare 180SX Nissan Silvia 2.0l DOHC from about 1985/6 bought wth full service and all that, import papers (a squaddie germany import)

anyway - car lasted a few months but needed to be moved on

8 years later, buy almost as rare Sunny ZX coupe 1.8 16v 1990 model.

I find old key from previous Silvia, on a whim, unlock 'new' car, get in, start 'new' car and drive off with a key that I found and am not even sure it was from the Silvia...

I'm bemused as to why more hybrid and town bikes aren't fitted with nurses locks

they are always there, imobilize your bike if you are just popping into the corner shop or looking at your bike through the cafe window.
and you can attach a cable loop to most of the modern ones for when you are going to be a few minuets longer.
