Re:

Social deprivation, disenfranchisement and oppression of minorities are things we can only really fully address within our borders. These are major factors in radicalization, so theoretically we are largely able to influence the development of 'home grown' terrorism. After all, there are and have always been conflicts constantly evolving worldwide; it is not as though their reflection domestically is a given.

To paraphrase a 2006 sc-fi book set in 2038 - ''We are in a bottleneck of history - technology is advancing the human race whilst organized religion is trying to throttle it''

These are Muslims killing Muslims (and others who happen to be in the way) - it's nothing whatsoever to do with religion, just the same tribal warfare that goes on all over the world. You can put religious brand names onto the different factions but they're not killing each other over doctrinal issues, they're killing each other because each "tribe" hates the other and wants more power for themselves.

It's Sunnis killing Shias and Shias killing Sunnis. It is entirely about religion, just at a finer resolution than "just" muslims. The equivalent of Catholics killing Protestants and vice-versa in the Middle Ages in Europe (and more recently in Ireland and Glasgow).

The Catholics killing Protestants in the middle ages was maybe partly about religious beliefs (but really mostly about political power struggles) - "Catholics" and "Protestants" in Ireland and Glasgow killing each other were certainly not doing so for religious reasons, it was and (is) a long running political struggle with the usual tribal "them and us" hatred using grossly simplified religious labels for convenience.

Greed is the simple cause of all these conflicts; greed for money and greed for power.

Re:

I would have to go with AJM's view on this. Funny how, when necessary, all the religious factions live quite happily side by side. It is only when there is something to be gained by stirring things up that conflict results, and whatever convenient differences are used to divide and conquer.
