I'm going sober & smoke free...day 4.... 03/10/13

Re: I'm going sober...

Odd question but i will try to answer - in relation to drink and not cigs - i would have no difficulty not drinking for a month. I like a beer and i like the pub and i like going out - maybe only for 2 hours per week but i enjoy it. If i said "I am not drinking for a month" it would be no problem and there are months in the past year where this has been the case due to family circumstances.

I hope that helps although it does not really answer your question in relation to the a), 2), iii) or c) queries. I suppose when i was younger and drinking a lot more and a lot more often, i would have had an opinion but now i am lacking in that.

It was just with you saying "I do not think i could stop the beer though - you're a bigger man than me." I was wondering what was behind that.

Are you saying the booze is immaterial, and it's the socialising - and you could be happy with the social aspect, not necessarily involving booze - so going out / to the pub, but not drinking something alcoholic, or is it all part of the same deal?

That's not me trying to drive or suggest you do so - merely trying to understand why you said you didn't think you could stop - is that you don't think you could stop the whole going out / socialising / pub thing, or specifically, couldn't stop the having a drink? Suppose you had a medical condition, or had to take medication, such that you could drink alcohol (either permenantly, or for a temporary period) how would that affect it - would you still do the going out thing - is it that that's key, or is it a bit of both - ie you wouldn't really do one, without the other - or not on an ongoing basis.

You've just puzzled me a bit, really, in firstly saying you don't think you could give it up, to saying a month would be no sweat - but I'm just trying to understand what you meant in both statements.

Re: I'm going sober...

Well, to explain, i am trying to stop smoking (as per the other post) i will be stressed by that and if i have a beer to relax that may help. Stopping two things which you enjoy at the same time must be harder than stopping one.

If i don't have a beer next month, so be it, access to drink is controlled by numerous factors - work, family, friends etc etc so if we have a family member who is ill and i do not get a drink - i will manage. That has happened before.

Does that satisfy your curiosity?

Re: I'm going sober...

All the best Richard. If you change your habits I'm sure you will succeed.. If you don't buy them you can't smoke them and that will be my ethos from this Sunday..

Pressure is only a personal thing..

Hah - in your face to my senior school form tutor.

And they said I'd never amount to anything - how wrong they were!

Hang on a minute...!

Thanks - best of luck to you too.

Cheers fella..

Same back to you.. Feel free to lean on me if you need support..

As for me.... Little over 24hrs to go.. Although I'm trying to drink my way through any alcohol in the house, I've changed all my habits and smoked barely anything either.. :)

Re: I'm going sober...

Ok Day 1 has been a triumph, but has demanded the utmost of determination and willpower...

Cravings for fags are a lot lower than they were this morning, but I'm feeling strangely light-headed a lot more of the time..

As for drinking, no major craving to nip to the pub tonight, but the missus is quitting them both tomorrow so that could rapidly change..
