matt24777 you're a proper gent but I've already paid for a replacement form sunny California,I really do appreciate the offer.
I think mine must be one of the early ones as its a little different to yours,the locking bolt is at more of an angle.

The Mavic is meant to have a split crown race I think. IIRC there is a crown race and a bearing seat which goes on top of the crown race.

The bearing 'ring' is split. The rest is normal. No seat though.

Ken, there was nothing at the bike jumble suitable by the way.

Thanks for looking FluffyChicken, I've managed to track down a NOS DX M651 headset,mind you it is in Oceanside California, for a very reasonable price delivered, there seems to be lots os NOS floating around the US.
