What bikes came with these specced back in the day??? Put another way, what bikes do they look 'right' on??

Perfect fit would be the Vitus frame Melvin has . Vitus and mavic just go well togother .

Are the retrofriction or index? And can they run 8 speed in index mode?

Index in 8 speed beautifully, in fact with an SRP 10 tooth cog add on I ran them as 9 speed before shimano had thought of it! Great little device, replaces your lockring, bit of respacing and redishing and hey presto a 9 speed cassette with 8 speed spacing!
