I would recommend the gloopy stuff too. It is an excellent barrier to water and can resist good pressures. Excess will work its way out of the hubs in use.
Get it out a can from Halfords or an auto-suppliers. Theres a floating disc in it with a hole that you push down and it squirts up the middle. Nice.
Fill a little grease gun with it and your laughing.
I've always found the lithium stuff to be relatively water soluble. Weird stuff.
