Dating a bicycle (when you have the father's permission):

Where to look:

The mech and cranks will have Shimano's date system marks on there somewhere.

The seat post looks original and should have a date near the diameter size.

The stem looks original and will prob have a date near the stem diameter.

The bars may have a date on the end under the grips

it's got a fair bit of a DX groupset (cranks, brakes, rear mech) an Altus C50 front mech

Sounds right (apart from the Altus) should have been DX thoughout (apart from pedals).

Personally I would say it's a 1991, as my Apex (which was red with black splatter) is a 1992 bike.....

1991 would have been red with tiger / splatter stripe.

I would have guessed as a 92?

Well the 91 brochure only lists the red tiger / splatter job for the Apex.

Later years looked to have options, but not for 91

I think there's a PDF floating around, I'm sure I've downloaded one from a link on here (think it's the german copy, though)

Cranks have OI marking making them September 1990.

Looks like mine is a 1991 then - in that case I agree with the previous reply that yours may well be a 1990 by the graphics and components.

Either way it is all a long time ago but only seems like yesterday!!
