Cromovelato 70's Roger Roche Super Vitus 971

Very interesting wheels. Was the painting factory applied? And crows foot lacing. Not seen that one before. I guess it's supposed to be slightly lighter than 3 cross?

possibly slightly lighter than 3 cross but actually I have just discovered that these have certainly been built by "the lacing master" from Biarritz , Marcel Borthayre (' confess did not know him prior to this).
A small logo is on the wheels and Biarritz was written on it - unfortunately "Biarritz" went away when cleaning as the wheels were extremely dirty
And painting the inside of the holes was apparently one of his trademark

Not surprisingly , he built some wheels for some spanish Zeus and Zeus is located in Eibar in the basque country just beyond San Sebastian, very close to the border to France and Biarritz.

here a bit more info on crow's feet and the master wheelbuilders

Hi, i just bought this bicycle for EUR 150 before knowing what it was...

Can you tell me anything about it? I see it is also a Roger Roche, but with 753 reynolds.

I don t know anything about it apart from what i read here. Could anyone give me more infos?

had to change the rear wheel because i needed the bike imediately and there was no "old style" tires around. However, i kept the original with me.

Best regards,

JM

Re:

you won't find any more stuff about Roche than I did , I fear.

Certainly limited quality output

he was also involved into the Vitus 979 frame development I believe.

Your bike is probably very light  thanks to the tubing and some weightconscious parts ( brakes, front mech)
rera mech seems to be the "aerodynamic" Simplex SLJ ?

What are the hubs and the crankset ?

Re:

a bit of a mish mash truly
rear mech is an average Simplex SX630 - not an SLJ
hubs seem to be normandy luxe competition with the red cap - but frankly nothing to write home about - don't come close to campa record hubs or dura ace ones

the choicest is clearly the frame - it would be nice to better see the details of welding - and rear end and fork top and end
