Campagnolo Record 8 spd tension spring refit

I had to remove the b tension holder to rejig it to contact the frame. I'm now having a Dickens of a time trying to refit the tension spring assembly.

I've done these before and never had this level of difficulty.

When winding the b tension plate/stopper, the spring is uncoiling. This is natural until the stopper meets its recess and the whole thing should pop down to allow the spring washer to clip onto the pivot bolt.

I just cant get the plate to go round without the spring trying go escape, and at the same time with my extra pair of hands push the assembly down to bed it in. It's easy to damage the finish as well with stills and pliers.

Any solutions out there?
