7 speed cassette to replace 8 speed question

Hi,

I have a LX hub/wheel with an 8 speed cassette, but the shifters etc I have are for 7 speed.

Am I right in assuming that I can take the 8 speed cassette off, and put the 7 speed on with a spacer and be all good ?

Or am I way off
