1998 rockhopper build

Peughop

Dirt Disciple
Hey all,

I have just purchased this frame and fork, both in great condition. I'm going to build it up as a 1*11 if possible and go with some gravel drop bars.

Does anyone know what new headset I could run on this?

Depends on the size head tube/steerer it has. Most likely 1 1/8". And whether the forks steerer is threaded or non threaded (ahead).

A standard 1 1/8th should do the trick, plenty come up on here and there's a nice silver chris king in the for sale section if that's your thing. Judging by the pics you'll need a derailleur hanger as well if you want to run gears at the back.

I have a fairly cheap, but decent headset that should work just fine on your rockhopper if you like.
Just let me know if so

I want to go with all black:

Headset
Stem
Bars
Seatpost
Crankset- probably xt
Derailleur - xt or grx
V brakes - xt or xtr

Forgot to post I just bought that wheeset as well. Not sure of 11-46t 11 speed casette will fit on the hub.

The headset seems to be Richey logic but has some missing bearings perhaps this is good enough to keep and buy a new bearing cage for it?

It depends on which way you're going with the build I suppose, I tend to steer away from ball and get cartridge bearing headsets. That said I'm still running a bog standard tioga in my GT backwoods because that's what came with the bike. Why not throw some new cage bearings in there with decent grease and see how it goes for a season and upgrade later?

Stout hubs on FSR's in 99/00 ran mega 9 iirc, so you may get lucky on the mega range dinner plate rear cassette ;-)

hm. doesn't look like a 97 to me. welds look like alloy. dropouts look weird... gussets on frame look more modern etc.

sorry, not what you asked for at all. and what do I know?

I'd go for an FSA headset, or actually the generic (very cheap) chinese ones have been OK for me (and others on here)

here's a 97
