New project..

An quick inspection of this 1994 (?) K2 A2 shows how well in tune this bike is visually: the color of the X-Torsion 7005-T6 aluminum is not only nicely matched by the other ‘K-Tec’ parts, such as the seat post (with a narrow, perforated, Bontrager saddle) and the bar ends, but also by the Mavic 230 TIB rims that are in nice condition, laced to XT m737 hubs (date code ‘RF’) with DT Swiss spokes.
The crusty ‘red’ Tioga Psycho-K’s will most likely not appear on the refurbished version of this bike.
There’s a greasy XT cassette and m737 front and rear mech, controlled by GripShift. DiaCompe 987 cantilever brakes, SS7 levers.
Moreover, a Sugino Impel crankset, Onza pedals with -still soft- elastomers. Rock Shox Mag20 forks that bounce, but make kind of a ‘slushy’ sound..

As is, the bike (18") weighs -an acceptable- 11.2 kgs (24.7 lbs).
Let’s first do some cleaning!

Been stripping and cleaning today :)
The XT wheels turned out quite nice!

Removed everything from the frame, but the headset cups and the shark fin (and some dirt): as such, it weighs a little over 1800 g..

Progressing..

Cleaned and rebuilding now (some bolts are still rusty, so work in progress..); a few questions: are those Mag21's, or 20's?
And how does one replace the cable on GripShifts: it seems you should be able to just pull apart the shifter, but I am unable to do so.
Lastly: the Sugino cranks came with relatively long crank bolts: do they need those, or can I also use the easier ones that I've used now, which are shorters though?

Thanks ! Enjoy the weekend.

Gripshift: on one side you can enter the cable from the outside, on the other side you will have to disassemble the unit. You can open the Gripshift by removing the hex screw.

Hi, this is a really nice Bike 👍
It was the end of line bike from K2 in 1994, and was according lists just 10.2Kg light.

Originally it came indeed with Tioga Psycho Tires. Just they look rather like the amberwall variant.
But maybe this is catalog shoot is misleading, the entire picture seems to be a bit off in terms of coloring...

Thanks!

It's a lightweight bike indeed, but I guess the 10.2 kg is with the rigid forks it originally came with?
The Mag forks make it a tiny bit heavier :).

But still look forward to the first ride!

Thanks, Melvin!
I loosened the hex screw, but have not been able to pull the unit apart yet.. I'll try if completely removing the nut helps.
