It is really not the same imho. Cyclocross bikes were laid out for maybe a 32mm tyre max, they had and have angles like a road bike and are not made to be chucked down a hill. It was and is a special discipline, where often bikes are carried instead of ridden through muddy and technical patches in very high energy short races. Fun to watch, though.
