Deep in the pink on this one.
So, as you may have seen in the marketplace thread, a minty fresh Monster popped up on the 'bay last week. I hemmed and hawed, and posted it up on here to try to temper my impulse to grab it......but I've always wanted a pink Monster, and '91 is the year of my first Fat (a Yo), I've always wanted an XC Pro bike, and......damn, this thing is beautiful condition. Ok, so, enough reasons---I grabbed it
The seller was the second owner and the bike is in impeccable shape. Thankfully he packed it perfectly, and in a Madone box to boot. The bike looks like it has never really been ridden. There are a few minute blemishes (missing half an "A" and part of the head tube decal from a cable rub), and the paint around the seat lug area is a bit rough, but those are the breaks on the mid-range Fat I suppose.
A few odd parts: I pulled off the Flite that was on it (don't really care for the embroidered logo) and put on a black '91 I had. The previous owner said he had been running it drop bar for a while, but since put it back to flats with a nicely swept Surly Torsion bar. I really dig the bar, but it doesn't quite jibe the rest of the period build. The Fat Chance stem is also slightly longer than what I'd like, though I really dig it too. The pedals are Dura Ace flats/cages with Binda straps and in beautiful shape.
Changes:
I think I'd like to make it drop bar again. I can get a Nitto Dirt Drop stem new easily enough. I'd need to find some proper lever--Superbe Pro would be awesome, and get a bar. It wouldn't be period, but since it will be taped and the drop is shallower, I might try a On One Midge. But I am open to suggestions. Maybe even a moustache bar---or the Mungo--and keep the XC Pro shifters/brake levers.
All in all, it is completely gorgeous, and I am happy I went with my impulse! I'll post up some more pics later tonight!
