opened up an XT M770 shifter.
the gears turn stiff when i get down to 8 through 9.
saw a spring lodged inside just to the right where the barrel adjuster sits.
i've taken it off and the shifter is much better.
question is, what the hell is this spring doing there?
is it suppose to be?

any one got an idea?

are you sure its not the barrel adjuster spring itself that has somehow worked its way through to the mechanism ?
do they have these on M770 even?
what does the other shiter look like inside, does it have a spring?

It keeps the ratchet pawl pushed into place as in the first pic

Second pic there is no pressure behind the pawl so it will slip..lift off the ratchet wheel. :?:

well i asked both those questions to myself:

charlieboy: the barrel adjuster is still in one piece (still has spring and it is larger and shorter)
moffyr: the ratchet pawl has already got a coiled spring attached to its shaft (see picture 4) and has enough force in that to keep the ratchet working well. i've assembled it all back together and its working fine..:?:

when inserted like the first pic, the spring dislodges really easily and gets caught up in the ratchet, which makes me think its not supposed to be there....

i'm at loss until i take apart the other shifter....
