Shimano's first attempt to make a rapid rise derailleur, also known as a low-normal derailleur. The spring is changed so the cage will go down when pulled on the cable. Another difference is the cable mounting position, on this one it is on the underside of the parallel body. This temporary version had a wheel on the back for a smoother cable routing. This wheel did not continue on the later models. The attachment bolt on this version was hollow.
It changes gears effectively when you really need it. ie - under pressure going up a hill and changing up as the spring tension is positive as you go up the cassette.
