What use for un-wanted stuff

I've got a cheapo way of doing it that works, but must admit I never thought of this - sounds like a much better way of keeping it all square on. Do you do it QR/washer/wood/cup/frame/wood/washer/QR?
 
I've found that I can never find that old stem / seatpost / pedals etc when I need to find them. I must live near a parts black hole, bits disappear never to be seen again. And, if I buy a replacement they magically re-appear in a completely random place.
