My '98 Kona Muni Mula - Ride pics added !

I'm not a great ally fan but that's a real beauty :D. Chainstay protector's gotta go though - orange and blue   .

Right - here she is. Ready to rock

Completed yesterday and pics just taken. I always wanted this build to be a usable ride. Not too much in the way of fancy stuff just a good workman like bike: the sort of MTB I always wanted bitd but couldn't really afford. So i've kept the frame in natural alu, warts 'n all. There are dents & marks a plenty but the point is that it looks the part. It looks like a well loved trail beater

Thanks to those that provided bits and added their comments. I may change the bars/grips at some stage and as mentioned before, I have a pair of XTR M950 hubs awaiting some suitable rims. Money's run out at the moment so that will have to wait awhile !

Yup the chainstay protector will go when I get round to buying a black one !

Otherwise i'm happy with the results :D

Steve, that's a great build and, in my humble view, just the type of bike that makes a true Retrobike and captures the spirit of the forum perfectly. Ti Moots and Steel DeKerf's are all very nice but you can't beat an old skool Kona - they just ooze cool! :D

Cracking build. I too had a '98 Muni (late 98, coloured version) - lovely bikes - nice tidy dropouts. Sadly mine died in an OTB incident when the front wheel went down a storm drain in the woods  - no visible frame damage (although the forks and front wheel and headset were totalled) but the frame developed an unexplained creak and was replaced under Kona warranty.

RIP Marshall Newt . . . please don't laugh ;) - I loved that bike.

That's one colourful Kona fella & thanks for the comments

Have replaced the blue Lizard Skin with a new and more subtle black Specialized protector. Also replaced the saddle with my Bontrager Race one because I think it looks a little more period (complete with scuffs!).

Steve.

Some shots taken this morning at a wooded location on the north coast of the island called Egypt. Lots of rocky single track which winds down across the cliffs and through the dense woods. France in the distance.

I hadn't been there for years, so the jumps were a surprise ! I didn't risk my old bones I hasten to add

Great build, bike and photos... like all the others say. I too have stripped and polished a frame - it's bloody hard work but nice when it's done eh.

I only have one slight suggestion - you can shorten the cable outer to reduce the loop just before the rear derailleur that model of rapid rise XTR mechs.

It'll make it look just that bit cleaner!
