Think I just shredded Cook Bros cranks

Picked up a Stumpjumper M2 frame with a pair of fairly worn Cook Bros cranks

Was in the process of removing cap on drive-side (pictured), had to apply a good bit of force (anti-clockwise), then very unpleasant feeling as the allen key completely gave way

As you can see, it's basically circular now

Anything I can do to get the crank off the bike? or will they be a permanent fixture now?

dremel a slot along the diameter so it acts like a big flathead screw. Loosen with a dime or flathead screwdriver.
 
That cap is replacable. You could also try to hammer a torx in.

But the question is: Why didnt it come out in the first place?
Apply oil first?
Maybe a bit heat would help?

Thanks - I used a good size allen key, which went in very deep, which is why I am surprised it gave

Not to sound like a moron here, but is there any chance that these particular cranks open clockwise on the drive side?
 
I'd go with the torx approach. If you taper the ends of the splines a bit with a file then it will go nicely in. It also doesn't preclude using more invasive methods (such as dremel or easy out) later.
