I am sure they will do the trick, not used XLC pads but assume they are decent if your bike shop sold them to you.

I use Koolstop, they are not cheap I think I paid over £15 for mine.

It is the length, or "reach" of the arms. But more isn't better, because it's the reach from the bolt hole to the rim. Too much or too little and it'll miss entirely - you don't want brake blocks touching the tyre or the spokes :shock:
