Yes this exactly, the wall of the house is straight and the garden wall is flat topped brick so about 8" wide. I'm thinking that I am going to have to install a channel on top of the wall to divert water to a butt/drain. If I have to use supporting columns then the space will be restricted sufficiently to scrap the idea.

I'm 99% it's our wall, joined to our house, made of the same colour brick (next door being different) and is separated from next door by vehicular access to their parking.

You're probably correct there, I may have to take the door off if we want to extend but it's probably only going to be 3-4sqm.

Shed/greenhouse guttering's only 3in wide, you should be able to support the ends of your beams on top of the wall and still have space for the guttering. 2in of overlap will be enough for the ends of the beams. Mine's got 4x2 wall plates, 3x2 beams going crossways and 2.5x1.5 (or 50x38 I expect it actually is) bits going lengthways.

We finally moved in last Thursday, no broadband yet, just using my mobile as a modem. The area I want to cover is 4.3m x 98 cm, the brick wall is 1.8m High so even a flat roof would have head clearance for me!
