Hey!

Basically any issues over the years have met with the same response; give up whatever it is that causes the issue! I think they'd prefer it if I weighed 50st and they could spend £000's on surgery and counselling!
If you're not happy go back, and tell them you're not happy, and if necessary, that you want a second opinion. Has your doctor just been dismissive about this, or asked any pertinent questions?
Don't be afraid to say you want a second opinion - I've done that before now, and there's nothing wrong with it.

I don't see the harm in it, but...

Glucosamine manages into the "slight" region - probably generously, chrondroitin doesn't make it into the funky bubbles, as there is no evidence, least that's encouraging above placebo. The supplement industry is rife with claims, and anecdotal evidence, but much of it is completely unsubstantiated by actual studies, so take with a pinch of salt - well not literally - I doubt it's harmful, so the worst that could happen is you're out of pocket a bit, but you may feel better because you believe you will.
(see: http://www.bmj.com/content/341/bmj.c4675 for the actual study relating to joint pain)
