My USB front light only lasts a couple of hours on full beam, but that's enough for a weeks worth of short 15 minute night rides for me. Separate rechargeables would allow you carry spares if you want to do longer rides, but you'll have to factor in the cost of the extra batteries and a charger as well. If you do go this route I highly recommend Sanyo Eneloop batteries, they hold there charge really well, whereas some cheap Ni-Mh batteries self-discharge quite quickly when not in use.
