Ship ahoy.........any sailors in............

Dinghy sailing is by far the best road in to learn the basics.

Generally, going out on your own is a no no. Same logic applies to climbing, canoeing, downhill, ski-ing/boarding off piste, etc.

Take a course, and at the worst you can team up with a couple of new sailing buddies when there is nothing organised you want to join in with.

There are so many courses available, but the RYA is the standard.

The best sailors start in dinghies. Try a couple of local dinghy clubs (RYA website will give a list of ones local to you) and go with the friendliest. Typically it's a couple of weekends and then you will have enough of the basics to spend a summer pootling around on the club lake (most clubs now have a few boats to hire for minimal cost to members). After that you'll have enough connections to find a boat and know enough about what you want. Racing is the best way to improve your sailing.

Nice to hear about Rockley Point - it's where I keep my boat. :cool:

BOAT= Bring Out Another Thousand

The happiest days of a boat owners life: the day he buys it and the day he sells it.

Twas the first google result I got for boat ownership.
